On November 6th, Panasonic announced that it had developed an 8K camera system equipped with the world's first 8K organic sensor. The camera is scheduled for release in the fall of 2019. The system will be on reference exhibit from November 14th (Wednesday) until the 16th (Friday) at Inter BEE 2018, held at Makuhari Messe.

The AK-SHB810 multi-purpose camera has a compact, lightweight box-type body with a PL lens mount. One of the major new features of this camera is that it is equipped with the world's first 8K organic sensor (top photo: to the left is the AK-SHB810 camera unit, to the right is the AK-SHU810 image processing unit which connects to the camera via a fiber optic cable).

■Wide dynamic range made possible by enlarging the circuit area
The 8K organic sensor uses an organic-photoconductive-film (OPF) CMOS image sensor which has a unique structure, in which the OPF performs a photoelectric conversion and the circuit area performs charge storage and signal readout functions independently. Thus, by enabling a larger circuit area in the photoelectric conversion part, wide dynamic range is made possible. As a result, it is possible to achieve high-resolution 8K video even with outdoor daylight images covering a wide range between intense sunlight and shadows.

■Equipped with a global shutter
Optimizing charge storage and signal readout enables the camera to be equipped with a global shutter which is capable of imaging all of the pixels in an image simultaneously. Therefore, even fast-moving subjects can be captured without distortion, thereby eliminating rolling shutter effect issues such as flash banding, which produces a "banding effect" from flash photography which creates separate horizontal bands of light and dark on an image.
The organic sensor, by controlling the voltage applied to the OPF, can change its sensitivity. This makes it possible for the electrical ND filter function to be steplessly realized.
