Towards a Hierarchy of SDI Data Rates

[Abstract]
New Ultra High Definition formats and high frame rates require increasing data rates in image transport. Payload rates approaching 200Gb/s are required in support UHDTV-2 image structures at 120Hz progressive, and our ability to capture and display images has once again leap-frogged our ability to transport, control and monitor them.
A hierarchical approach to increasing data rates including single-link and multi-link SDI operating at 6Gb/s, 12Gb/s and 24Gb/s over copper and optical interfaces, has been proposed and is currently being standardized by the SMPTE. The hierarchical approach provides affordable steps towards extended data rates within the broadcast facility, and continues the ability of the industry to re-purpose existing core infrastructure for the real-time transport of Ultra High Definition image structures at high frame rates, wider color gamut and high dynamic range.
This UHD-SDI seminar describes progress in technical standards and technology development, for single-link and multi-link SDI interfaces operating at 6Gb/s, 12Gb/s and 24Gb/s using protocols which enable simple compatibility between data rates. It shows the performance that can be expected at these data rates, over copper and optical interfaces, and introduces coding concepts to improve the reliability of serial video.
