IBEX Technology, developer and marketer of codecs including HEVC/H.265, MPEG-4 AV/H.264 and MPEG-2, will hold an exhibit at Inter BEE 2018, held from 11/14 (Wed) to 11/16 (Fri) at the Makuhari Messe, demonstrating their codec products, internally-developed codec intellectual property, transmissions equipment, and more.

• Delivering 20ms super-low-latency at 4K/60P
IBEX Technology’s new product, the HEVC codecs HLD-5000E (Encoder) (above left) and HLD-5000D (Decoder) (above right) are the industry’s first to deliver 4K/60P at a super-low-latency of 20ms. Presets can be changed from the front panel, allowing PC-less operation. At 2K, the HLD-5000E is also equipped with the ability to encode two different sets of footage simultaneously.

The triple-standard-compatible HLD-5000D decoder’s internally-developed decoder core is equipped with support for HEVC/H.265, MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and MPEG-2 encoding. It features a small form factor; the same 1/3U size as the 5000E. Both it and the HLD-5000E deliver an astoundingly low codec latency of 20ms. When decoding, the input stream is automatically identified and the device automatically switches to the appropriate decode mode.

• Accumulating codec technology and knowhow
Akihiko Iwata, head of IBEX Technology’s sales department, states, “While developing our contract services that employ our LSI design and development knowhow, we have developed a thorough intellectual property strategy, assembling a range of IP specializing in compression and decompression technologies for MPEG and other codecs. This product is the latest in that line of products that makes use of our internally-developed IP.”
Mr. Iwata also said of the company’s codecs, “The main feature is the low latency. It’s thanks to this that we have enjoyed so many years of use in the broadcasting industry.” He further stated that this low latency is taken advantage of when operating heavy machinery at a distance, used to monitor machinery’s operating parts and images of the surrounding area in real-time.

• Making use of real-time quality for long-distance operation in times of disaster
“When using heavy machinery to conduct civil engineering in locations with a high risk of secondary disasters following major typhoons or other natural disasters, optical fiber is drawn to the site, and wireless communications used around the heavy machinery, where cables can’t be connected. At that time, H.264 has been used for video processing, together with our HLD-300C codec, with its 10ms latency,” Mr. Iwata stated.

The new HEVC codec to be exhibited is the successor to the HLD-300C technology. Its super-low-latency system is part of a processing procedure for image encoding known as Wavefront Parallel Processing (WPP). Normally, encoding and decoding is carried out on a per-picture basis, the image composed in memory before being computed. A delay is thus produced as a result of the time spent waiting for processing to finish. WPP begins encoding computations before the image is complete, transmitting each strip of the image individually and thus greatly reducing delay.
