Sony spun off its professional-use imaging products business into a new subsidiary in April, Sony Imaging Products & Solutions, which made its first appearance at NAB.
This year's booth was themed "Beyond Definition," and featured new products ready for next-generation broadcasting technologies such as 4K video, high dynamic range (HDR), and IP live broadcasting, as well as solutions for efficient video production.
For live broadcasting, Sony is promoting the "SR Live for HDR" solution that enables efficient production of high-quality 4K HDR video. In addition to 4K HDR video production solutions, the company also introduced a new solution for HDR video production at HD resolution. Also, a free software update was announced for the XDCAM solid-state memory camcorders PXW-Z150 and PXW-FS5, which will newly enable Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) recording and feature a new "instant HDR work flow" that will shorten the time necessary for HDR production. Also displayed was an actual model of the new α9, from the recognized α series of general-use cameras.
In the field of high-end production, Sony's proprietary recording format X-OCN, a solution to produce and use high-gradation 16-bit scene linear data at an efficient data size, was officially exhibited for the first time at NAB. Proposed for use with the PMW-F55 4K camera, new peripheral products to support an efficient workflow, the AXS memory card reader AXS-AR1 and the organic viewfinder DVF-EL200, were also announced.
Sony also proposed a media conversion service as a new cloud service solution, and announced XDCAM Air, a cloud service that works together with handheld camcorders.
Additionally, as evidence that Sony's past technological achievements have been recognized abroad, a corner of the booth exhibited an Academy Award for Technical Achievements (for the F65) and an Emmy Award (for the HDC-4300) from the United States.
